Happy 9 Months!

Dear Little Bug,

You’ve now been out in this beautiful world as long as you were in my little oven baking. And, it goes without saying you’ve made the world (especially my world) a much better place.

This month, your personality transformed into something magical. You react and respond, and more clearly communicate what you like and dislike. For example, you LOVE bananas. You eat them by the spoonfuls, at any and all times I offer them. But, on any given day, you decide you HATE carrots. And, when you decide you hate them, you spit them out at me as quickly as I feed them to you.

Your new interest of the month? Restaurants. You love the colors, the people, the noises and all the smells. If you’re lucky, we even let you “taste” big boy food. You mingle with our dinner neighbors, and by the end of our meal, we most certainly have made new friends, courtesy of your sparkling, attractive personality. People are just drawn you.

In the last couple weeks, you’ve mastered the art of mobility. You roll like it’s nobody’s business, and skootch backwards with a look of confusion on your face like “why am I not going forward?!”

This months milestones include:

* Mobility * Drinking from a straw * Swinging * Trying your first McMenamin’s tatertot, sans the fried outside * Playing catch with Lola*

We’re still waiting on those pearly whites to make an appearance. But, I’m happy to report that you are getting better at sleeping *almost* all the way through the night.

I love you, bug. I love that I wake up and go to bed with a smile on my face because I have you in my life. I love you for your giggles and screeches, and the way you borough your head into my neck when you get nervous around new people. I love you because you remind me of the goodness and beauty in this world.

Today marks 60 amazing years on this earth for my mom and Logan’s gammy. If you know my mom, you know she doesn’t look a day over 50…but in honor of her 60th birthday, here are not quite 60 things I absolutely love about my mom.

She’s straightforward and honest * She’s witty * She always takes my phone calls – even if it’s the 10th one in a day (no kidding!) * She loves coffee as much, if not more than, me * She is one of the most loyal people * She would do anything for her family, friends and even strangers * She’s the best gammy * She can turn a piece of trash into a treasure * She’s creative * She will drop anything to take care of her kids, dogs and Logan * She can dress up with the best of ‘em, and get down and dirty with the boys * She has an amazing ability to find good deals * She loves a good adventure * She worries for all the right reasons (and some of the wrong. haha) * Logan’s beautiful blue eyes – courtesy of my mom * She takes time to be friends with my friends * She will always go shopping with me * Logan lights up when she walks in the room * She reassures me that I’m a good mom * She makes me a better person * She has a unique/beautiful sense of style * She makes time to talk to her kids & siblings practically every day * She doesn’t take herself too seriously * She’s a harder and stronger worker than most men I know * She has a way with words * She’s forgiving and understanding * She created Logan’s amazing nursery * She cooks dinner for my dad EVERY night * I can tell her anything * She’s a great wife, mom and gammy * She always makes me feel more confident * She would rather receive a lawn edger than jewelry as a gift * She appreciates the simple things in life * She never arrives empty-handed * She has no reservations putting me in my place when I’m out of line * She can turn any bad day into a good day for me * She can yell at me and I know she still loves me* She knows more about me than any other person in my life * She’s 60 today…and looks absolutely amazing!!

Mother’s Day

What a great first Mother’s Day! I spent it with my mama and Logan – and it was perfect! We went shopping (for PJs for Logan) and ended our day with beers at McMenamin’s. Now, that’s what I call a great day.

I was going about my daily routine on Friday, when all the sudden my sitting baby was no longer sitting where I put him. He decided it was time to get moving, and he did just that. He’s not crawling very fast, nor is he up on all fours, but this boy knows how to shimmy his way around.

It’s definitely time to finish baby proofing the house!

It’s amazing the love and happiness Logan has brought me. This past week has been less than stellar and quite challenging, but walking through the door and seeing his smile and hearing his laughter wipes the worry and stress away.

I’m lucky. I’m grateful. And, because of Logan, I know that even on the worst days, things will be just fine. In fact, they will be amazing.

Bath time has always been Logan’s most favorite time of the day. He loves being naked, splashing around and playing with his toys. This week was a big step in our bath time routine – Logan moved out of his baby bath and now takes a bath in the ‘big boy’ regular bathtub.

There are many great things about my job. But, on the top of the list is that our leadership team encourages us to volunteer in the community, and provides us a set amount of work hours to do so.

Last Monday, my team volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House in Portland. We pulled up our sleeves, put our chef hats on, and made the residents a delicious chicken dinner.

It feels so good to give back. I need to remember that, and start doing it more often.

Dear Bug,

This month has been a busy one. Hence, my delay in posting your monthly letter. The sun is FINALLY shining, and you finally get to experience the beauty of Oregon. You relish in our nightly walks, and have a fondness for playing in the grass. I think you will definitely be a lover of the outdoors.

With each passing month and day, you continue to find your voice. You sing your own songs and seem to enjoy talking to Lola more than anyone else. Speaking of Lola, you’ve finally figured out that she’s going to be your pal. You two are forming an amazing bond.

You still don’t have any teeth – where are those little whites?! But, you have been teething these past few days. I wouldn’t be surprised if they pop up in over the weekend.

I’m looking so forward to the coming months. Trips to the park. Outings to the farmers market. And, I think we will be heading to Utah to introduce you to your big, wonderful family there!

Logan’s been dealing with a runny nose and cough going on nine days. He seemed to be on the mend, until yesterday morning. He woke up super congested, super tired, and unable to sleep unless in the upright position. For most of the morning, he and I sat on the couch and he slept on my chest. Although he was sick, I do have to say I cherished the snuggle time I got with him.

Since we were headed into the weekend, we went to visit Dr. Luckianga to be on the safe side. I’m glad we did. Seems that the little guy had a slight case of bronchialitis and a left ear infection. Dr. Luckianga wrote us a prescription “just in case” Logan got worse over the weekend.

I’m happy to report that after a few more long naps yesterday afternoon, he woke up happy and a lot healthier! He still has a slight runny nose, but not as much congestion. Phew!

On a side note, Logan weighed in at a whoppin’ 19lbs 12oz yesterday.

He’s a happy boy even when he’s sick!

Logan’s first Easter did not disappoint. Auntie Brooke and Unckie Benny hosted a fabulous brunch at their house – and Logan enjoyed tasting a few of the treats! He enjoyed digging into his Easter Baskets – yes, he’s spoiled and recieved numerous baskets!! After brunch with the Wheeler fam, we headed to Sharon and Ron’s to watch the final round of The Masters. I have to say, for Logan’s first Masters, it was not the storybook ending I was hoping for. I was really pulling for Kenny Perry to win. Bummer.

On this very special day, I feel blessed to have so many wonderful people in our lives.

Family Time is Good for the Soul

This past weekend was the absolute best. My aunts, Dotty and Wendy, traveled from Utah to visit us in Oregon – and meet Logan. It was a fun-filled weekend of shopping, dining out, walking and just good ol’ family bonding.

Logan loved his great aunties, and there visit couldn’t have come at a better time for me. I’m lucky to have such good family.

For four years Katie and I have been participating in the MS Walk to honor her mama, who has MS. Some years we have a big group, some years we have a small group, but every year we have a great time supporting a great cause.

This year the walk was extra special because my aunties from Utah were in town to walk with us. Double bonus – this was Logan Henry’s first walk, too!

Two weekends ago, Scott and I took Logan on his second road trip to Milton-Freewater – a small Oregon town minutes away from Walla Walla, Washington. It was a long drive, but well worth it. We went there for our friend Erin’s wedding, and we were able to see lots of friends we haven’t seen in months/years.

On the docket of activities was a trip to the Browns’ tasting room. They make the yummiest wine and cidar in Oregon. And, no, I’m not biased. :)

Unfortunately, my camera battery died shortly after our arrival, so I was unable to capture a lot of photos. :(

As Logan gets older, it’s amazing to watch him interact and form bonds with our friends’ little ones. He finally reached the age where he realized Cynthi Jean (5 months older) is his buddy, and not someone to be afraid of. Now, instead of crying, he gives Cynthi Jean kisses and wants to follow in her footsteps, literally (she’s walking). And, when our friends Tara & Carl visited with their sweet newborn Preston, Logan learned how to be “gentle” with the younger baby.

Today is an important day in history for my family. Not because the book of Mormon was published (but, without the Book of Mormon, we would not have Big Love. And what would life be like without that amazing show?), or because Jonas Salk introduced his polio vaccine (even though, we’re very thankful for this).

If it weren’t for this day in history, neither my brothers nor I would likely be on this earth causing all the trouble we do. 32 years ago today, in Salt Lake City (the home of the Book of Mormon – fitting, right?), my lovely parents were married. And, I have to say, that in this day-and-age, 32 years is something to CELEBRATE!

I can only hope that Scott and I can build as strong as relationship as my parents. They love each other, respect each other and, above all, always have each other’s best interest in mind.

7 months old

Dear bug,

Today, is an extra special day. In addition to celebrating your seven month birthday, we are celebrating the arrival of Audrey Walterscheid – Devon and Josh’s baby girl. It may be a while before we get to meet her (since they live in Longmeadow, Mass.), but I have no doubt in my mind you two will become fast friends.

Lately I find myself sitting in amazement at the things you do. There is nothing better than hearing your laughter as you sit on the ground and watch Lola run around like a maniac. You are mesmerized by Lola, like I am by you. Oh, and the tricks that you have learned. You no longer HATE/DETEST being on your tummy. This is only because you can roll over without thinking twice about it – and love smirking at me like you won the battle.

To your delight, your daily menu keeps expanding. Bananas, carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, pears, prunes. You name it, and you love it. Well, except for peas. I have to tell you, Pappy is a little disappointed that you don’ t share the same love for peas that he does. We will have to work on this. Maybe it’s an acquired taste.

It goes with out saying – I am blessed to have you in my life. You fill my heart with happiness and joy, and make each day so much sweeter.

What can I say about Aunt Dotty?
Obviously, she’s my aunt (my mom’s sis) and she’s celebrating her birthday today.

More importantly, she is one of my most favorite people in the world. Despite living thousands of miles apart (she lives in Utah), we’ve had a special bond ever since I was little. She’s one of the most genuine people I know.

I could go on for days about how wonderful she is, but what I really want to say is happy birthday – today we are celebrating you and how lucky we are to have you in our lives!

Logan tried really hard to pose for you, but alas, he got a little hungry and thought his sign would be a nice mid-afternoon snack.

Enjoying the Moment

These past two weeks have been the kind of weeks that used to throw me in a tailspin. Long hours at work, an endless chore list at home, etc. Six months ago, I wouldn’t have been able to stop until everything was checked off my to-do list. Ahh, how life changes.

If there is one single lesson being a mama has taught me (which, there isn’t – there are like 100 lessons) it is to enjoy the moment. Because each moment is miraculous onto itself.

So, as work remains busy and the house chores may not be completely finished, I’m sitting back and enjoying the moment – without feeling guilty.

Six Month Well-Baby Check Up

We’ve got a healthy, happy baby on our hands! On Friday, Logan had his six month well-baby check up and measured in at 17.8 pounds and 27 inches long. The 50th and 75th percentiles, respectively.

We got the green light to start feeding him more solids, so I introduced Sweet Potatoes this weekend. He loved them!

Goodness, Gracious Great Balls of Fire

Logan and I enjoyed a sunny drive out to my parents’ house today (Scott’s out of town), and we got way more entertainment than we bargained for! Within an hour of arriving Uncle Benny started a burn pile. Logan was getting a kick out of the orange flames, until the flames quickly started to spread further and further away from the burn pile.

The flames literally had a mind of their own, and within minutes they were in the trees. Luckily, I have some really smart and tough men in my family. As mom called 911 (yep, that’s right – Fire Trucks joined in on the fun), dad, Benny and Chad jumped on their Cat, tractor and four-wheeler, respectively, and started putting the fire out. By the time the fire trucks arrived, the fire was under control.

Needless to say, Logan and I enjoyed the entertainment and are extremely thankful the fire didn’t do any major harm. The only disappointing part of the entire adventure is that there was too much going on that I couldn’t snap any photos until after the fire was put out. The below photos do not do justice for the fire.

I giggle to myself thinking that this was just the first of many adventures Logan has to look forward to on the farm!

Logan Henry – Six Months

Little Bug,

Today you turned six months old. SIX MONTHS! This month you’ve truly turned into a little man. And, within a matter of a weeks, you’ve learned to sit-up, started eating solid foods and today you found your belly laugh.

Oh, that laugh. Within minutes you went from being as serious as serious can be, to squealing with laughter. It’s the absolute best.

I’m still trying to find the balance between mommyhood, work and friends. By the time I get off work, all I want to do is snuggle up and play with you. And, why wouldn’t I. Especially now that you’re giving me the best hugs and slobbery open mouth kisses. There’s nothing better than coming home to you!

This month, you also moved into your room. You moved in with no hesitation. Mama on the otherhand, is still nervous not to have you within arms length and checks on you several times a night. Daddy often assures me that you are a-ok.

Logan Henry, I love you so much. You’ve brought me and your dad more happiness than you will ever realize. And, even on the nights where you and I wake up three to four times “just because,” I still find myself anxiously waiting for you to wake up in the morning to start one more amazing day with you.

Big Weekend

It was a big weekend for us. We went on our first overnight trip with Logan Henry to Seattle to see Uncle Mike, Aunt Erin, Roger and Annette. Logan was a trooper!

We drove up Friday night, and Logan slept all but one hour. Scott played poker with Mike, Roger and a bunch of guys, and Logan, Erin, Annette and I went to a darling kid-friendly pub. It was such a treat to be able to spend time with Erin and Mike.

To top off our trip, we got to see Auntie Woo Woo (Cinda) after her 25+ hour shift at the hospital. We were so happy she stayed awake to visit with us.

After conquering his first roadtrip, Logan decided he wanted to prove what a big boy he really is, so he tried out his high chair and ate rice cereal! He loved both!

Instead of restating the obvious this month (how quickly the time flew by), I’ve decided to use this time to reflect on all of the things I want Logan Henry to remember about this past month. So here goes…

To my little Logan Henry,

This has been a big month for us! We celebrated your first Christmas, experienced your first snow storm and introduced you to your first nanny. All of which turned out to be wonderful experiences. You were smothered with love over the holidays, and despite being stuck in the house for two weeks straight, we made the most of the snow storm with lots of family time.

On January 5, we introduced you to your new friend Kelli (aka the nanny), and you loved her from the very first second you met her. She reads to you, sings to you and plays with you all day long. As your mom, it feels good to know you’re in great hands, but it’s hard to leave you while I’m working.

You learned so much this month! You are grabbing at everything in sight, and love to spend time in your exersaucer. You are so close to rolling over, and I know the second that happens you will be on all fours crawling all over the house! What fun we will have!! You’ve also been teething for the past two weeks. No teeth yet – but they are sure to come soon.

To end this amazing month, your new friend Preston Alixander was born. We can’t wait for you, Ella and Preston to grow up together and have all the fun adventures that we have had with their parents.

I can’t believe you are already five months old. My love for you grows stronger every second of every day.

This week has been the best! I only had to work Monday – Wednesday, and have been enjoying every second of my very long weekend with Logan Henry. Today, Logan Henry and I spent the day with Cynthi Jean, Cynthi and our moms. Every week that passes, Logan Henry is getting more and more interactive, and it shows every time we have a play date with Cynthi Jean. At first, Logan just stared at her. A couple months later he warmed up to the idea that she was fun to watch. Now, he tries desperately to interact with her and keep up with her. Obviously, that’s impossible as Cynthi is crawling and Logan is not.

It’s been so fun to watch them grow up together. I can’t wait to see what the upcoming years will bring. As our moms reminded us today, we weren’t as innocent as we lead our parents to believe. That’s a scary thought now that we have kids. Who knows the shenanigans they’re going to try and pull.

Busy, Busy Week

This week at work was the busiest since returning from maternity leave. And, wow, was it hard. By the time I got off work I only had a couple of hours to snuggle with Logan Henry before I had to put him to bed. A couple of hours is not enough! I’m hoping things slow down this week.

Scott returned to work this week after being on paternity leave for the past five weeks. It was the first official week with the nanny, and I’m so lucky to have found the gal I did. She’s so good with Logan, and Logan is all smiles when he is with her. Logan also gets to spend extra special time with Gammy and Grandma B, as they are each watching Logan one day a week to help Scott and I out. Again, we’re very lucky!!

There’s nothing better than cuddling with this little guy after a long day at work.

This is the first time in college reunion history I was unable to attend – I think this is our sixth annual event. Because of the snow we had to cancel our original plans of getting together in Seattle the weekend after Christmas. The only time available to reschedule was New Year’s Eve. Unfortunately, I had to work and weather was still a little iffy, so I didn’t want to risk the trip up North with Logan.

This event is one I look forward to almost more than any other every year, so I was super bummed to have missed it. But, I’m so glad the tradition carried on and the girls got together.

Today we visited our favorite Doctor – Doctor Luckianga – for Logan’s well-baby check-up. I’m glad to report, all is well!

Logan weighed in at a whopping 16.5 pounds (doubled in size since birth) and is 26.3 inches long. He is in the 75 – 90 percentile in both height and weight.

Since I have quite a few friends getting ready to welcome babies into this world, I’m going to start providing lessons I’ve learned along the way. Visiting Dr. Luckianga reminded me of one of the single most important lessons I’ve learned to date – find a pediatrician that you love! Do your research, get referrals. This doctor will be caring for your baby his/her entire childhood – and, believe me, it’s so important to know your baby is in caring hands.

Despite being snowed in, and our Christmas plans altered, Logan’s first Christmas was nothing short of magical. He had no clue what was going on, but having him here made the holidays so amazing.

Four Months Old!

At one month, I couldn’t believe Logan was a one-month-old. At two months, same thing. At three months, I thought the time was flying. And now he’s four months old. It feels like I blinked and it’s been another month.

I guess the saying is true: Time flies when you’re having fun. And fun is an understatement. Fun, joy, wonderment. Logan is the light of our lives.

At four months Logan is “talking” a lot more. He still loves sucking on his hands, and has become much more independent. He loves to play on the floor or couch by himself and is now big enough to play in the exasaucer. Oh, and we can’t forget to mention how much he LOVES diaper time. This is the time where he gets to play just in his diaper – no clothes. He loves. Giggles the entire time!

My friend Brooke recently was inspired by another friend to post ten things she currently loves. I thought the idea was so great, I’m doing it too. It’s so easy to get caught up on what’s not going right, that I thought this was a brilliant reminder of all the amazing things in my life.

TEN THINGS I LOVE

1. Being a mama

2. Logan. There are so many things I love about this little guy, I could go on for hours.

3. Starbucks. Specifically decaf grande soy lattes. Even more specific my weekly Starbucks’ dates with Cynthi and Boo.

4. All the brilliant women in my life. I’m surrounded by smart, spunky, amazing women. {You know who you are.}

5. Curly Girl Cards. These cards say it all. No matter what you’re faced with in life, these cards provide the inspiration to enjoy the moment more or the pick-me-up needed to get by.

6. College Reunions. Every year my five girlfriends from college get together during the holidays for our annual reunion. This no easy task – one lives in Hawaii, one in Massachusettes, one in Washington and two of us in Oregon – but so very worth it!

7. Christmas shopping with my mom. We’ve had the best time Christmas shopping this year, although we get to talking and forget that we are actually supposed to be buying gifts. :)

8. A good book. Currently, I’m ready Marley and Me.

9. Scott. And what a good dad he is.

After being cooped in the house for three days because of the winter weather, Logan Henry’s learned a new trick. He can grab things now! He’s been close to grabbing for a good two weeks, but on Sunday he officially perfected it!

And, if you’re wondering where his “first” snow pictures are; unfortunately, we don’t have any. Logan Henry’s been fighting a cold, so there was no way I was letting him go outside! He did love watching the snow fall from the comfort of his warm house. :)

Work/Life Balance

So here I sit, one week and two days into being back at work. As you all know, I had been dreading going back for quite some time. To be more exact, my dread began the minute Logan arrived in this world.

How could I leave this sweet little boy 40 hours a week? What was he going to do without his mama? These and hundreds of other questions weighed on my mind. I have never felt this guilty.

So here I sit, one week and two days into being back to work, and I can honestly say I'm okay.

It's been hard; super hard. I don't like not being able to give Logan my undivided attention, but I also am thankful that I have two more months of being home with him everyday. (I'm working from home.)

Last week marked a new chapter in my life, and when this chapter closes, I will hope that I've mastered the art of work/life balance.

**By the way, Logan Henry started sleeping through the night exactly two days before I had to start work! He's amazing!**

Our day on the {Christmas Tree} Farm

We had the best day yesterday! Scott coordinated a brilliant fundraiser for his golf team to sell Christmas Trees from my parents' farm. He and his golf boys arrived bright and early in Estacada to cut and bail 70+ trees.

It took Logan and me a little bit longer to make it out to Estacada, so we missed most of the action, but we still had the best time. The Klings, Lebretons, Cabas, Grandma B and more came to get their Christmas Tree, so Logan got lots of lovin' from a lot of his favorite people.

The holidays are so much sweeter with our little babe. And on this Thanksgiving we are so THANKFUL to have Logan Henry in our life.

On Thanksgiving Day, we went to the Baranick's house and spent the day with the fam. It's been a month or so since we've seen Erin & Mike. It was great to catch up and have Logan get to spend time with his Aunt and Uncle.

Yesterday, we headed out to my parents' house for our non-traditional, second annual, Seafood Fest Thanksgiving. It's Scott's absolute favorite dinner, and has become a fun/unique tradition for my fam.

We also picked out our Christmas Tree! I can't believe it's already that time of the year. I'm looking forward to putting it up and decorating it next weekend.

A Baby Divided

Little Logan hit a major milestone last night - he slept through the night! 8:30pm to 6:30am! It was amazing! We've been working so hard on this, and I am so PROUD of him.

Too bad mama was a nervous wreck and didn't sleep that well. I woke up at midnight, 2am, 4am, 5am and then finally at 6:30am when Logan woke up. Every time I had to check Logan's breathing!

Three Months Old!

Mr. Logan Henry turned three months old this Thursday! These past three months have been an amazing blessing and adventure. Watching Logan grow and learn about the world around him has truly been like nothing I've ever experienced. Hands down - he's changed my life and my priorities.

The "third" month also marks the near-end of my maternity leave, which means it's back to work for mama. I go back December 1. Scott and my mom can attest that I'm a nervous wreck. I have a never-ending ache in my tummy, and can't imagine not spending everyday with my babe. Don't get me wrong - I love my job, and know that right now it's in the cards for me to have to return to work. But I'm hoping a small miracle will happen that makes it possible to only have to work part-time in the future.

Even if it was a quick over night stay, it was so good to see the Wrights! They flew in from LA around 9pm last night, and were out the door by noon in order to make it to Milton-Freewater by this evening.

Carl and Tara are expecting a beautiful baby boy this January! The baby, yet to be named, is due on my little brother Ben's birthday. Which, I think is a sign of good things to come. Some things you learn from losing

If you know anything about Estacada, you know that it is rarely in the news for good things. It's sad because Estacada is a good town, and a great place to grow up. And did I mention they have a great soon-to-be city counselman (my brother, Ben!) - but that is beside the point.

The point is, no matter how big or small your town is there are great people in it. A lot of great people. So when I read the below article in The Oregonian, I can't tell you how proud I was. I don't know the coach, nor do I know the boys quoted. But I'm quite certain that ten years ago when I was in high school the same article could have been written - the players' names just would have been Peter, Danny, Willy and Matt.

Some things you learn from losing | By Andy Parker

On a grass field pushed up against the Cascade foothills, the Bad News Bears of regional high school football take the practice field, the burst of late October sun exploding off their helmets in blinding flashes.

How bad? Not so very long ago, 0-and-10 horrible. No wins. No respect. Virtually no fans.

Of course, even if you like sports, why should you care about the Estacada Rangers football team?

Perhaps, for some very sound reasons, you've never liked all the focus on team sports, from overblown big-dollar high school football programs to Phil Knight's ducky little country club down south, to the gazillionaires of pro sports.

Let's face it, there are lots of very rational reasons to be irritated by the hype of sports these days.

Then you meet somebody like Jake Hyde, a 17-year-old going on 30 who stands calmly outside the Estacada weight room, and you're not sure you heard him just right.

Did he just say, "We learned from losing that you have to be humble, even when you win"?

"We tell the JV players coming up," he continues, "it's important to respect the other team, not to get too high or celebrate too much. Don't embarrass anybody.

"We've been there. We know."

Or this from Cody Toth on the losing years: "To be honest, it was tough. We barely made it through the season. Kids quit. It was demoralizing. You just keep working hard."

Or Alex Pursel's take on it all: "Every day in practice, you just tried to get through."

By the way, they're in first place.

Ask them what changed and all three point to their second-year coach, a 27-year-old La Salle High grad named Brigham Baker in his first head coaching job.

If you know local football, you already know he played some college ball, that his dad, Ray, was the longtime Clackamas High coach who's moved on to coach at Sandy High.

If you don't know football, Hyde, Toth and Pursel can tell you all you need to know.

"He makes it fun." That's what all three players said, word for word, in separate interviews.

Baker keeps it simple, they said. He expects a lot of them. But always, he keeps it fun.

None of which would mean anything if Baker didn't know football. But he does. So back when he rolled into town two years ago, he looked around and knew enough to see this:

He knew in the era of glitzy passing offenses where every kid lives to catch the long touchdown pass and ham it up for the local TV cameras lurking in the end zone, the only way to win right now in Estacada was to take football back several decades and run the ball virtually every play.

So the kids sit down before practice and stare at game films and celebrate out loud at each perfect execution of the simplest, most beautiful play in all sports:

The extended block of a guy who outweighs you by 30 pounds, holding him off for a mere one or two counts, just long enough for your buddies Hyde and Pursel to crash through for another three yards.

Then you get up and do it again.

And again. And again.

And you don't mug for any cameras. You don't berate the other team.

You feel lucky to be 17 and alive and playing for a young coach who can help you understand the simple joy of the perfect trap block that springs your teammate, the same guy you played with back on that 0-10 team, for an exhilarating, crunching, four-yard touchdown.

And you know, win or lose this Friday night against your coach's high school alma mater at PGE Park, you won't forget those 10 losses.

Win or lose, you'll pick yourself up at the end of the game and congratulate the guys on the other side of the line. You won't forget them.

Because you've come way too far to ever again think it's all just about you.

On Monday, my dad had to have surgery to repair a hernia. To celebrate a successful surgery we decided to make him dinner last night. (Well, Brooke and Ben made the dinner - Chad and I brought the sides:)).

We took Logan Henry to his two month well-baby check up today and all is well! He is growing like a weed. He's officially 13 pounds 2 ounces, and 24 inches long.

Not only is Logan a big boy, he's a tough boy! He got four vaccines today, which means three shots! He cried just a bit, but was quickly back to his giggly self.

Two Months Old

Wow, time really does fly. Tomorrow, Logan Henry will be two months old! I can hardly believe it.

Each day with Logan is better than the last. He's smiling all of the time now and fascinated with just about everything in his site. Ceiling fans seem to be his favorite thing at the moment. :)

And, boy oh boy, is he getting big! Unofficially he is 24 inches long and weighs 13 pounds. We will have official numbers after his two month well-baby check up on Tuesday.

Last week my boss at work suggested I read the book Baby Wise. She swore that the plan outlined in the book would help Logan sleep through the night in no time. Of course, me being sleep deprived, I sprinted to Barnes and Noble to buy the book.

By slightly changing Logan's schedule, and providing him a structured routine, I'm already seeing changes - and it's only the second day. Logan isn't sleeping through the night yet, but last night he slept longer stretches and went right back to sleep after he woke up to eat. AND, he just went down for a nap awake and fell asleep by himself.

Hopefully this pattern will continue, and I will have good news to report by next week. :)

Carl and Tara Visit!

It's always a great weekend when we get to spend it with Carl and Tara - and this weekend was no different. Carl and Tara came into town so Carl could go to the Beavs game with Scott and Tara and I could spend some quality time together.

I can't speak for the boys, but we girls had a great time! Tara is six months pregnant, so we had a fairly relaxing weekend filled with shopping, lounging and a lot of chatting.

Farmer's Market

Logan, Katie, Tara and I took advantage of the beautiful fall day we had on Saturday and hit up the Beaverton Farmer's Market. We had a such a good time wandering around the market, sampling the fresh produce and purchasing a few key items (caramel corn and tulip bulbs).

Date Night with Mr. Logan

Scott and I had our first date night with Logan on Friday night since his arrival. We went to the Cheesecake Factory where his cries would mix right in with the loud noise of the restaurant, but to our amazement Logan didn't cry once! He was wide awake and happy right up until our dinner arrived, and then he conked out and slept the rest of the time.

It was bliss! Not to mention the first dinner I have been able to eat with two hands. :)

Fall is in the Air!

Fall is my most favorite season in Oregon! The colors, the chill in the air, college football season, being able to bundle up...I love everything about it! This year, fall is even better because Logan is here. He's already experienced watching Duck and Beaver football (on TV), a couple "bundled up" walks and soon we will be heading to the pumpkin patch!

On Thursday my mom invited a group of our good family friends up to meet Logan. Mom was the last in the group to become a grandma, so it was crazy to hear the women go from talking about their children (me and my friends) to their grandchildren (our babies!).

It's true. I have a slight obsession with Starbucks. I can't help it. I love their coffee. I love the ambiance of their coffee shops. I love my baristas. So, it's only fitting that I introduce the little man to Starbucks early in life.

Yesterday we took our first trip to Starbucks with Cynthi and Boo. I have to say, Logan seemed to really like it! The bright colors kept him mesmerized and the music was calming.

Logan Slept 8 Hours!!

Prior to Logan being born, all of my friends who have babies told me that all babies do during their first month of life is eat, sleep and poop.

Hmmm. Not my baby! He eats and poops, but sleep - nope, not our little guy.

For his first five weeks of life he rarely slept more than 5 hours a night, and his favorite time to play was from midnight to 6am. We would go some days when Logan only slept 4 hours in a 24 hour period.

But last night we had a break through! Logan slept for 8 hours! Not in a row, but he only woke up three times to eat, and went immediately back to bed. It was AMAZING!!!

Logan's First Golf Tournament

On Saturday, Sept. 20, Logan attended his first golf tournament - The Mike Newton Golf Classic. This second annual event is held in memory of our family friend, Mike Newton, who died of esophageal cancer in 2007. The tournament was a great success, and I think we may have a little golfer on our hands. :)

Walk, Walk, Walk

Logan's favorite thing? Walking. If he's upset and crying I can throw him in the baby bjorn and within seconds of walking outside, he's a happy boy again. Can't get the little guy to fall asleep...throw him in the bjorn and go for a walk. It's amazing!

The Little Things

My mom told me before I had Logan my world would flip upside down. The things I thought were important would no longer seem like that big of a deal. My "new" world would center around my baby.

She was right.

I wake up every morning with the sole purpose of providing love and comfort to my little man. Right now he's struggling with a bad case of gas that has caused major tummy pains for him...and although both of us are lacking sleep, and he's experienced a week of uncomfortableness and fussiness, I wake up everyday excited that I have the opportunity to take care of him.

Logan is already four weeks old. I can't believe how fast the time flew by! Let's hope the next four weeks are just as amazing, with a little less gas and a lot more smiles.

So Many Firsts

It's been three week of "firsts" for Mr. Logan...and it's been amazing watching him take in the world around him. Not a second goes by (even the long sleepless nights) that I don't love being his mama.

The Gang Is Growing

Yesterday Kurt stopped by to meet Mr. Logan on his way down to LA. That's right - LA! He, Katie and Ella are moving to LA for Kurt's new job. During the visit, Kurt and I couldn't help but laugh about how much our lives have changed in the last year, more specifically the last six weeks.

For the past four or so years, Kurt & Katie, Carl & Tara and Scott & I have formed a great bond. And no matter how far away we live from each other, we always make the effort to get together at each others' houses or go on vacation together. During these trips we golf, we relax, we drink - we really have no schedule.

And as we get ready to plan our spring break vacation, Kurt and I realized just how different this year is going to be. Not only did Kurt and Katie just welcome their daughter Ella, and we just welcomed little Logan...Carl and Tara are also expecting a son in January! So within the matter of six months, our group of six has grown to a group of nine!!

So, while our annual vacation won't exactly be the same as it has been in the past...I can guarantee it will be even more fun, just in a VERY different way.

Our gang has expanded in the most amazingly brilliant way; and I think I can speak for all of us, when I say we all feel so BLESSED.
